Light Meals Training and Entrepreneurship Training for Unemployed Youth in Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai islands livelihoods recovery programme therefore aims at supporting the recovery of the productive economy in among 501 households in Pagai Utara and Pagai Selatan communities affected by the 2010 earthquake and tsunami through supporting recovery of the agriculture and fisheries sectors, facilitating development of the agricultural and fishery value chain and supporting strategic planning on basic service provision, including water and sanitation.

Background

On Monday, October 25, 2010 the Mentawai islands experienced an earthquake and tsunami, which caused loss and damages to the amount of 348,92 billion IDR, with the major impact on the productive economy. To support reconstruction efforts, the New Zealand Aid programme has contributed the Indonesia Multi Donor Fund Facility for Disaster Recovery (IMDFF-DR), which is an established mechanism to help fund implementation of the government of Indonesia’s rehabilitation and reconstruction action plans (RENAKSI) that are formulated following disasters that require international support.

To support recovery on the Mentawai islands, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFPA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have formulated a joint livelihoods recovery programme under the guidance of the office of the resident coordinator. The government identified three major priorities for the joint programme, including:

  • Assistance for clean water provision and improved sanitation;
  • Assistance for improving the agriculture value chain, including sme development; and
  • Assistance for improving food security.

Objectives:

  • To monitor the Automotive On Job Training for 10 unemployed youth from affected Mentawai People in Padang.
  • To facilitate light meals training to 200 women from affected Mentawai people in KM 10 North Pagai, KM 27 South Pagai and KM 37 South Pagai.
  • To facilitate ToE of Get Ahead to 200 women from affected Mentawai people in KM 10 North Pagai, KM 27 South Pagai and KM 37 South Pagai.

Activities:

Light meals making training to community

After the 10 youths completed the 120 hours vocational training in Padang, they then will train 200 women in 9 sub villages. Detail schedule is attached.

ToE entrepreneurship training

The ToE of GET AHEAD will targeting 200 women in 9 sub villages. The ToE will have total 10 batches @ 20 participants. The detail schedule of the ToE is attached.
