Launch of new water system in Lanao del Sur

The ILO Water and Sanitation Project funded by the Government of Japan launched its largest water system in Wao, Lanao del Sur built by community members.

The new water system connects six villages in Lanao del Sur and provides access to clean and safe water. The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Japan today launched the largest water system in Wao, Lanao del Sur to provide access to clean and safe water amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The launch was held on 30 March 2021 in Wao, Lanao del Sur.

ILO’s implementing partner, A Single Drop for Safe Water, supported the community contractor, Katutungan Irrigators’ Association in constructing the water system. Under the project, 263 community members were trained and hired in construction, mostly those who lost their jobs and livelihoods during the pandemic. Workers received wages and social protection benefits. Occupational safety and health protocols were implemented.

The water system built under the ILO Japan Water and Sanitation Project connects six villages with a population of over 10,000 people. These barangays have limited water access for two decades. The water system with 69 tap stands will cover communities, agricultural areas, schools and a birthing clinic.

ILO Water and Sanitation Project Head, Ms Ma. Jennylyn Aguinaldo and Ministry of Labor and Employment (MOLE) Minister Romeo Sema who is also the Chair of the Project Advisory and Review Committee led the launch and turn-over of the water system to Mayor Elvino Balicao, Jr. representing the local government and community of Wao, Lanao del Sur. Female workers hired to construct the water system - Ms Vicenta Penecilla and Ms Lydia Rondina shared how their family and community benefitted from the project.
