Labour Standards on Fishing Vessels Workshop

Background and Rationale
The ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries is committed to advancing decent work in the region. In collaboration with the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the ILO is implementing the Labour Standards on Fishing Vessels (LSOFV) project. This initiative spans 15 Pacific countries, including ILO Member States: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu, as well as non-Member States: Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, and Tokelau. The project aims to enhance government agencies’ enforcement of laws and promote ILO instruments such as the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188) and the Work in Fishing Recommendation, 2007 (No. 199), and work with fishers and fishing associations to advocate for fishers’ rights.

Workshop Context
As the LSOFV project concludes on 31 December 2024, a sub-regional workshop will be held by the four Implementing Partners to:

1. Highlight lessons learned, good practices, reflections, and insights from the Labour Standards on Fishing Vessels Project
2. Update partners on the work completed to date and plans for 2025-2028
3. Guide future efforts to improve labour standards on fishing vessels in the Pacific Islands

Participants: 80 tripartite participants from Ministries of Fisheries, Labour, Maritime Authorities, and Employers’ and Workers’ organizations from the 15 project countries.
