For a just transition in adaptation: The role of social protection in the Global Goal on Adaptation

The 29th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place from 11 November to 22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

At COP29, the ILO will host the event “For a just transition in adaptation: The role of social protection in the Global Goal on Adaptation” to dive deeper into the role of social protection in reducing vulnerability, increasing resilience and adaptive capacity for all. The event will be framed by the findings from the latest World Social Protection Report 2024-26 focussed on climate action and a just transition, which presents the latest global data on social protection around the world, including in countries most vulnerable to climate change.

The event will provide an opportunity for governments, workers, employers and experts to reflect on the significance of including adaptive social protection for all under the targets for reaching global climate resilience and the Global Goal on Adaptation. This will also include a discussion of the usefulness of existing indicators on social protection for measuring progress towards the GGA targets.
