Jordan and the ILO tailor career guidance manuals for employment services in Syrian refugee host communities
Representatives from international agencies and Jordan’s Ministry of Labour discuss methods to integrate tools from existing career guidance manuals in order to strengthen the capacity of employment services in communities Syrian refugees.
The ILO in Jordan will bring together representatives from United Nations agencies, officials from the Ministry of Labour, as well as non-governmental organisations to discuss methods of integrating tools in existing career guidance manuals in a bid to improve employment agency services in communities hosting Syrian refugees. The meeting will examine the content, development and field application of existing manuals created by international agencies in attempt to construct an integrated user-friendly manual that can be beneficial for employment service providers, particularly for Syrian-refugee hosting communities in Northern Jordan.
The ILO’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan focuses on creating employment opportunities through local economic development in host communities. Such interventions are part of a joint-UN agency response plan in Jordan managed by the United Nations Development Programme.
As of late January 2014, over 580,000 registered Syrian refugees were registered with the UN. While around 160,000 refugees live in designated camps, the remaining refugee population has found shelter in rural and urban host communities across Jordan, particularly in the cities of Amman, Mafraq and Irbid.
