Promotion of Women Workers Rights and Safety. Ratification of ILO Domestic Workers Convention C. 189
Under the ILO - ACTRAV / Norway Project “Trade Unions for Social Justice”, the national trade unions viz. AITUC, BMS, CITU, HMS, INTUC & LPF in Tamil Nadu are implementing various activities on promotion of ratification of ILO Core Conventions C. 87, C. 98, C. 138, C. 182 & C. 189 covering all the 32 districts in the State through the Joint Action Forum (JAF).
The JAF apart from the campaign activities on promotion of core conventions initiated joint activities on gender equality and mainstreaming with specific focus on addressing women workers issues in Tamil Nadu, and later, on organizing domestic workers and further also linking them to the State run social security programmes by enrolling them into the Domestic Workers Welfare Board.
Apart from this, the trade unions also have taken steps towards ensuring safety for women both at work place as well as in the society in general. In the recent times crimes against women are on the rise, and also women’s safety at work place if of great concern. Therefore the national trade unions in Tamil Nadu would like to take up women’s issues.
In this background, the NTUs JAF in Tamil Nadu plan to conduct a public meeting highlighting and addressing women workers issues and their safety at work as well as in general. On 8th March 2013, a public meeting will be held at Madurai. These efforts coincide with the ILO’s message on International Women’s Day “STOP violence at work”; Promoting decent work for women and men that is of free from violence at a time when ending violence against women has taken centre stage in the international media, is high on the political agenda in many countries, and the topic of this year’s United Nations Commission is on, the Status of Women. International Women’s Day 2013 presents an important opportunity for the ILO to host a world-of-work discussion on how to stop violence at work.
The main objectives of the public meeting are as follows:
Domestic Workers Post Card Campaign: In the public meeting, the post card campaign seeking ratification of Domestic Workers Convention C. 189 will be concluded. The completed post cards from 6 NTUs will be despatched to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India seeking intervention on ratification of C. 189 and its effective implementation.
Submission of Memorandum to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India: The public meeting will also facilitate in drafting and adoption of a Memorandum to be submitted to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on women’s safety issues and ratification of C. 189.
Awareness Publicity Materials: Awareness publicity pamphlets in local language (Tamil) will be prepared including contents on the IWD message for this year and also on Domestic Workers Convention C. 189. Badges on IWD, banners etc will also be prepared for wider circulation and publicity.

- To bring together working women including women from domestic work, informal economy and all other sectors on the International Women’s Day;
- To discuss women’s safety at work place and create awareness on the role of trade unions in addressing women’s safety at work place;
