The ILO will launch a new report on the Jordanian labour market, which focuses on three main groups of workers dominating the country’s economy: Jordanians, migrant workers and Syrian refugees.
Entitled “A Challenging Market Becomes More Challenging: Jordanian Workers, Migrant Workers and Refugees in the Jordanian Labour Market”, the report aims to provide practical solutions to three potentially conflicting policy aims in Jordan’s labour market: boosting Jordanian employment, incorporating Syrian refugees into the workforce, and ensuring decent working conditions for all, including refugees and migrant workers.
It examines five specific sectors: agriculture, construction, domestic work, manufacturing and tourism.
The report findings and recommendations will be presented during a launch event in Amman, which will bring together government, workers' and employers' representatives and other relevant stakeholders.
The research is part of a project, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), which addresses the complex mixed migration situation in Jordan with a view towards fair migration and decent work for all.
The project and the report are very topical not only in Jordan – which hosts large numbers of migrant workers and Syrian workers in addition to Jordanians – but also in a global context of ongoing deliberations under Global Compacts on Refugees and Migrants to be adopted in 2018.
