High-level symposium to advance decent work in women’s sport

During UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, the ILO, together with the Swiss Government, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Centre for Sport and Human Rights, have organized a high-level symposium on Decent Work and Responsible Event Hosting in Women’s Sport.

Alex Chidiac, Australian international soccer player and Lise Klaveness, President of the Football Association of Norway, explain the importance of supporting women in sports and how it can help advance social justice.

The event coincided with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, being held in Switzerland, and brought together governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, football and sport associations, professional women’s leagues, players’ unions, event organizers and civil society.

Participants explored how working conditions in women’s sport are evolving, with a focus on risks in major competitions, the growth of professional leagues and ways to foster fair, safe and supportive environments for all involved.

Panels examined lessons learned from organizing the Women’s EURO 2025, advances in labour standards and employment practices in women’s leagues, and measures to tackle violence and harassment in sport. The event highlighted practices and strategies to promote decent work and responsible event hosting across women’s sport.
