Faces of Women Workers in Palm Oil and Fishing Sectors

Women play important roles across the supply chain in the rural sectors of agriculture, fishing and mining. They are often involved in multiple activities simultaneously while taking responsibility for the well-being of the members of their families, including food provision and care for children and the elderly.

Women play important roles across the supply chain in the rural sectors of agriculture, fishing and mining. Women rural workers include unpaid family workers, subsistence farmers, small-scale producers and wage workers in farms, plantations; and agro industries engaged in the supply, processing and distribution of farm products.

They are also engaged in fisheries, plantation, trade, and production of goods of different kinds and other occupations. They are often involved in multiple activities simultaneously while taking responsibility for the well-being of the members of their families, including food provision and care for children and the elderly.

Rural women’s unpaid work greatly contributes to the function of their households, particularly those in poorer communities. Yet, women in rural areas face constraints in engaging in economic activities because of gender-based discrimination and social norms, disproportionate involvement in unpaid work, and unequal access to education, healthcare, property, and financial and other services.
