A collaborative effort between Aspire to Innovate (a2i), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the Department of Youth Development (DYD) is making significant strides in transforming Cox's Bazar by equipping young people with diverse skill sets that are in high demand by the job market. This initiative goes beyond traditional academics, ensuring participants are well-positioned for success in today's dynamic economy.
The ISEC project specifically targeted host community youth including students from Quami Madrasahs, members of ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and those who have dropped out of their studies. As of March 2024, over 520 female and male youth have benefitted from skills development training provided by local Skill Service Providers (SSPs) as the partners of a2i under this project.
The training programs focus on equipping participants with market-driven skills that are crucial for securing employment. These skills encompass web design, digital marketing, graphic design, caregiving, consumer electronics repair, IT support services, and more.
The initiative has already yielded positive results. Two hundred youths, including 60 females, have successfully completed a comprehensive skills development program consisting of 360 hours of training delivered over 72 classes. Additionally, 120 young people from underserved communities have undergone assessment and certification in accordance with the National Training and Vocational Qualifications Framework (NTVQF) curriculum established by the government. This assessment was conducted by either the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) or the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA).
a2i and the collaborating SSPs are actively engaged with relevant employers in Cox's Bazar to facilitate industry attachment and job placement opportunities for the skilled and certified youth. An upcoming job fair, organized by Aspire to Innovate – a2i as part of the annual work plan, will serve as a key platform to connect these job-ready individuals with potential employers.
The ISEC project interventions implemented by a2i encompass a broader vision for empowering the youth of Cox's Bazar. This includes:
Establishing a Labour Market Monitoring & Planning Platform specifically designed for Cox's Bazar.
Developing four Center of Excellence on 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills within existing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes.
Imparting pre-vocational skills to youth, particularly girls, enrolled in Quami Madrasahs.
Equipping Qawmi Madrasha students/NEET/dropout/underserved youth from the host community in Cox's Bazar with market-driven skills.
These initiatives aim to create a sustainable ecosystem that fosters opportunity and empowers young people in Cox's Bazar to contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
