Destination Management Organization Stakeholders Meeting for Bromo in East Java

Background and Justification

Job creation, poverty reduction, economic development and environmental sustainability has become a concern of many countries, including Indonesia. In terms of environmental targets, Indonesia has committed itself to a reduction of 26% (up to 41% with international support) in GHG emissions. This effectively means that climate change mitigation planning will be fully integrated into national economic development planning.

A previous multistakeholder meeting convened by the ILO’s Green Jobs in Asia project selected tourism as the pilot sector for green jobs development in Indonesia, in so doing supporting the national government’s Development Management Organisation (DMO) program. Among 15 DMOs, Bromo and Toba were selected to receive the ILO green jobs technical assistance, with a main focus on Bromo, located in East Java.

The ILO green jobs technical assistance comprises five pillars: sustainable tourism standards development, skills training, access to finance, policy support and infrastructure development, as well as a media promotional campaign. Over the course of 2011, the ILO provided technical support to a number of activities linked to these focus areas, including green standards development and skills training for tourist operators.

In December 2011, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Industry convened a DMO meeting in Bromo to secure commitments from stakeholders. As 2012 has just started, informing stakeholders about the ILO Green Jobs in Asia project, taking stock of prior activities and evaluating proposed activities for the new yearwill assist in further strengthening the work of Bromo’s DMO.

Activity and objectives

A half day workshop will be held in Surabaya aimed at pursuing the following objectives:

• To share information on the progress of ILO’s Green Jobs in Asia project activities in Indonesia and assess challenges associated with promoting tourism in Bromo.
• To highlight areas where ILO green jobs in Asia project can assist the development of Bromo’s DMO in 2012.
• To offer inputs into DMO programs and secure commitment from stakeholders on proposed Green Jobs in Asia project activities.
• To facilitate dialogue among stakeholders towards enhancing efforts to promote green jobs in Bromo.
