A study on discrimination at work on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity (PRIDE at work) in Indonesia found that transgender people faced the highest level of discrimination, including in relation to employment opportunities.
A study on discrimination at work on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity (PRIDE at work) in Indonesia found that transgender people faced the highest level of discrimination, including in relation to employment opportunities. This challenge leads to limited occupational choice for jobs and hence a key target group of Innovative business venture.
A need assessment conducted by ILO and HiVOS in 2016 for transgender organizations, revealed that:
Employment: only 10% of the member of the group works in a formal sector (mostly as hairdressers), most probably informal job; 40% of the member of the group works as sex workers; the rest of the group (50%) works on the street as street performers
100% of the group are indebted and over-indebted and managing financial resources is clearly a problem
Limited occupations as choice of careers, either as hairdressers, entertainer, or sex workers.
Out of 140 transgender in Bogor area, only 1 has a college degree, mostly is elementary school/ junior high school graduate and drop outs.
Many members of the group are aspired to be entrepreneur, partly as an impact of limited opportunities in formal employment.
Some transgender groups has already economic activities (as cooperative) but there is problem in management and sustainability of the business.
Following the assessment, series of training and coaching have been conducted: Financial education training in 2017, followed by entrepreneurship training and coaching between 2018-2020.
In February 2021, the ILO received request to introduce cooperative model that could be adopted by Transgender Community (NGO) that could further maximize the entrepreneurship potential and opportunities of the community member. In other side, the idea on cooperative model has been initiated by few NGOs either supported by funding agencies or through their independent initiative. Lesson learned and challenges will be also shared to enrich the formulated interventions and find a concrete recommendation at local context.
