Construction Sector: Challenges & Opportunities for Transitioning from the Informal to the Formal Economy’

The study results on ‘Informal Employment Practices in Bangladesh’s Construction sector and Opportunities for Formalization’ were shared with the tripartite constituents. After in-depth consultations, constructive feedback and recommendations were received for the way forward in dealing with the key informality issues on the construction sector of Bangladesh for transitioning to the formalisation of informal economy.
In the inaugural session, Special Guests, Dr Wajedul Islam Khan, Member-Secretary, NCCWE, Mr Habibullah N Karim, Chairman, Seminar Sub-Committee & Member, Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF), Mr Srinivas Reddy, Director, ILO Country Office for Bangladesh expressed their hope that the project will make efforts to help formalize the jobs of the construction sector workers, who are currently in extreme vulnerable situation. Mr Srinivas Reddy reiterated ILO’s commitment to work in the informal economy in Bangladesh. While, Chief Guest, Mr Mikail Shipar, Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment (MOLE) highlighted the Government of Bangladesh’s commitment to oversee the interest of the informal workers by amending Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 in 2013.
