Conference on Improving Labour Rights and Working Conditions in the Food Supply Chain: Sharing Good Practices and Moving Forward

In recent years, buyers and retailers have been active in more closely monitoring labour practices and working conditions in their supply chains and this joint event with its focus on enhancing the role of the business sector in promoting decent work in supply chains is relevant and timely. It coincides with launch of an EU and ILO funded project “Combatting Unacceptable Forms of Work in the Thai Fishing and Seafood Industry” and closely precedes two topically significant events for the ILO this June where the International Labour Conference will deliberate on “Decent Work in Global Supply Chains” and the world will mark the World Day Against Child Labour (12 June) with the theme “End child labour in supply chains - It's everyone's business!”.

This Roundtable workshop is also part of a project initiated by BSCI in 2015, when 19 BSCI private sec-tor members sourcing in the food sector joined forces to promote better recruitment practices in nine selected Thai business partners whom they source from, as a way to end forced labour, human traf-ficking and labour exploitation in their food supply chain. As such, this joint event builds on three pri-orities commonly defined by the group of BSCI project participants in January 2016: 1) Promote that the full cost of recruitment is absorbed by the employer, in line with the Dhaka Declaration adopted by Thailand on 13 March 2013; 2) Encourage long-lasting responsible business behaviour; and 3) Ex-change good practices that may inspire improvements in social performance.
The event will take place during ThaiFex, on May 26, 2011 in Bangkok.
