Communication: Tools and skills for mobilizing and organizing workers

This workshop aims to strengthen the technical skills and organizational capacities of unions in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of communication.

Communication is an important organizational and management tool of organizations includ-ing trade unions in their daily activities.

In their tasks of negotiating, defending workers ‘rights and decent Work, trade unions faced a dual challenge in terms of communication. First, trade unions must communicate effectively to their external audience to win public opinion in order to strengthen their influence to better negotiate with governments and employers. Second, they must regularly communicate to their internal audience to inform, mobilize and involve their members in the activities of the Organi-zation.
In a world where changes are growing fast, with the increasing of globalization and liberaliza-tion of the economy, trade unions need to think about communication strategies, building net-work with media and use new technology to effectively defend the workers’ interests.

In the Asia-Pacific region, despite strong economic growth in recent years, significant challenges still exist for trade unions. For example, with the growing inequality problems, trade unions are facing job insecurity, low wages, migration and the informal economy. In this regard, the need to strengthen trade unions to negotiate, organize and defend the interests of workers is crucial. Good communication skills and knowledge could help to strengthen trade unions in their role as negotiators with governments and employers.
