Ten Years of the "Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour"

The Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour (winner of the ILO Innovation Award in 2019), a 31 countries* tripartite action platform established to accelerate the eradication of child labour, celebrates 10 years of hard work. To commemorate this milestone, intensive days of dialogue and reflection have been organised.

This gathering provides an opportunity to renew our collective commitment and assess the progress made by governments, employers' organisations, and workers in building a child labour-free region. The ILO has supported this effort, promoting social dialogue and working with our development partners such as AECID, AACID, ABC, and USDOL.

Although significant progress has been made in recent years, more than 8 million reasons remain to continue the fight. Our objective remains clear: to achieve the first generation of girls, boys, and adolescents free of child labour in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In October 2014, 24 countries came together, alongside employers' and workers' organisations, to launch the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour, with the firm purpose of eradicating this issue in the region. A decade later, the Initiative has grown to include 31 member countries and remains fully committed to Target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which calls for an end to child labour in all its forms.

This tenth anniversary not only provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the progress made but also to reflect on the journey travelled and the challenges that remain. While we have achieved significant milestones, there is still a long road ahead. This anniversary reminds us that we must redouble our efforts and accelerate our pace in the fight to end child labour in the region.
