More efforts are needed to unlock the potential of social protection to support the achievement of the transformative agenda on gender equality. However, numerous challenges lie ahead. While the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets a clear vision in relation to the expansion of coverage of social protection systems, including universal floors, significant gaps in coverage and adequacy remain, including significant gender gaps. Developing a deep understanding of context-specific and gender-specific life-course risks, vulnerabilities, and needs is a pre-condition to success.

The panel discussion aims to raise awareness of the opportunities that sustainable social protection offers to accelerate the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls of all ages, including older women, through contributions from multiple stakeholders and a combination of theoretical perspectives, opinions, and evidence with attention to multiple crisis situations.
