This was the eighth global conference of PCC undertaken in partnership with IT for Change in India. ILO’s COOP/SSE Manager Simel Esim joined the event as a speaker where she reflected on the existing gaps in current Iabour standards vis a vis the platform economy and their relevance to platform cooperatives. She noted that platform cooperatives can contribute to promoting decent work for their workers and beyond while the absence of conducive environment may prevent platform cooperatives from being established to begin with.

Ms Esim focused on how labour standards in key issue areas, such as employment relationship, security, wages, and working time related issues apply to the platform economy in general and platform cooperatives in particular. She mentioned that national cooperative policies can be improved to incorporate platform cooperatives using the guidance of ILO Recommendation on Promotion of Cooperatives, 2002 (No. 193).

The participants to the conference issued a declaration envisaging “a techno-social order rooted in the principles of fraternity and cooperation.” IT for Change is a not-for-profit organization based in India, working at the intersections of digital technologies and social change. PCC is a hub that supports the cooperative platform economy through research, experimentation, education, advocacy, documentation of good practices, technical support, the coordination of funding, and events.
