ILO’s message for the Annual Conference of Russian University of Cooperation
ILO has sent a video message to the 2018 Chayanov Meetings on cooperatives in the system of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 17th Chayanov Meetings took place in Moscow, Russia on 8-9 November, 2018 under the theme of ‘Modern Cooperatives in the System of Sustainable Development Goals’.

The international conference, aimed at discussing the contribution of cooperatives towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, was organized by the Russian University of Co-operation under the auspices of the Centrosoyuz of Russia and the Association of Educational Institutions of Consumer Cooperatives of Russia with the participation of the International co-operative Alliance (ICA), regional and national cooperative organizations, research and educational institutions.
Simel Esim, Head, Cooperatives Unit, ILO video message to the meetingThe ILO contributed to the Chayanov Meetings with a video message that was presented during the opening session, moderated by the Chair of the Centrosoyuz Board Dmitry Zubov. In her video message, ILO Cooperatives Unit Manager Simel Esim mentioned the need to create over 600 million new jobs globally by 2030 to keep pace with the growth of working population. In this context, she pointed out that cooperatives can contribute to Goal 8 by creating stable employment, advocating and promoting social protection for all. Ms Esim also drew attention to the lack of internationally comparable data cooperatives. She also pointed out to the need for cooperation to test and improve upon the recently adopted guidelines on statistics of cooperatives.
