COP 28: Building Social protection Systems that support a Just Transition

The 28th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) will take place from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. COP 28 marks a critical moment of intensifying a triple planetary crisis, which is interlinked and cascading effects of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
A Just Transition means transitioning to environmentally sustainable economies and societies in a way that reduces poverty and promotes decent work for all. Universal social protection is key for supporting these goals whether it is by reducing people’s vulnerability to climate risks, by helping them adapt their livelihoods or by cushioning people against the negative socioeconomic impacts of policies aimed at reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
The ILO organizes the event “Building Social Protection Systems that support a Just Transition”. This event aims to increase awareness regarding the crucial role of universal social protection systems in fostering a fair transition. The event will showcase specific country cases on successfully transitioning to environmentally sustainable economies and societies.
