BOGOTÁ (ILO News) – The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, confirmed today that he will travel to Cartagena, Colombia in order to be present for the September 26 signing of the peace agreement between the government of that country and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

Ryder has highlighted how dialogue and perseverance allowed for, after several years of negotiations, the so-called “Final ending agreement of the conflict and the Construction of a stable and lasting Peace”, which will be signed in Cartagena.

The signing of a peace agreement in Colombia after more than five decades of conflict, "represents an opportunity to break inequalities through decent work, promoting social security, immediate employment and rural development,” said Ryder.

The Director-General of ILO commended the parties for having recognized in the final Agreement the role of the international labour standards from the ILO, decent work and labour rights as central to the formalization and extension of social protection of the vulnerable population in the field.

In recent months, Ryder has stated on several occasions the ILO’s support for the peace process, and stressed that, once made, the agreements to be signed this September 26 will mean that "Colombia is seeking to build a future of peace and inclusion and the ILO is available to continue working in this new stage".

Significantly, the ILO and Colombia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to promote the creation of more and better jobs in the rural sector in the context of post-conflict.
