New frontier or the latest buzzword? Evidence and best practice in entrepreneurship ecosystem development

The study maps out and analyse the global landscape of entrepreneurial ecosystems approaches implemented by different actors in the Global South.

In recent years, “entrepreneurial ecosystems” approaches have proliferated and an increasing number of organizations and practitioners use the term to describe their work supporting entrepreneurs in the Global South. However, there is a lack of consensus on what applying entrepreneurial ecosystem development means in practice. Different organizations and practitioners have varying understandings of this approach and its practical implementation.

Against this framework, the ILO has commissioned the present study to explore and map out the global landscape of entrepreneurial ecosystems approaches implemented by different actors in the Global South. The study proposes an integrated framework to analyse and categorize different entrepreneurial ecosystems approaches and provide a first stock taking on the effectiveness and sustainability of these approaches, as well as on the existing gaps and potential improvement opportunities to help practitioners and development actors implement sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems strategies.
