ILO supports crisis-hit Sri Lankan fishers

Vulnerable members of Sri Lanka’s fisher communities in the country’s northern province are gaining much-needed income at a time of economic crisis.

The ILO’s Local Empowerment through Economic Development and Reconciliation (LEED+) Project is implementing several short-term income generation schemes in the northern province, targeting youth, persons with disabilities, and women heads of households.

Participants are completing maintenance work in fishery landing sites and sea access pathways in their areas under the programme, which aims to create decent, inclusive, and sustainable jobs, while empowering of conflict-affected communities.

The LEED+ project is a part of the ILO's Global Jobs for Peace and Resilience Programme and is supported by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and the Government of Norway.
