The project is designed to work with the Malaysian Government, workers' and employers' representatives, and other civil society organizations to increase knowledge, awareness, and ratification of the ILO Protocol in the country; improve and develop responsive national policies and/or action plans and/or legislation on forced labour and child labour; increase efforts to collect reliable data in order to carry out research and share knowledge across institutions at national level; and strengthen workers’ and employers’ organizations to support the fight against forced labour in partnership with other interested parties.

Malaysia has ratified the ILO Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No. 29), Minimum Age Convention, 1973 (No. 138) and the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182). It also ratified and denounced the Abolition of Forced Labour Convention, 1957 (No. 105).
The project provides relevant stakeholders in Malaysia with technical support toward the ratification and implementation of the Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930. Its work in Malaysia focuses on awareness raising and advocacy; technical support to policy making; capacity building for government, workers, employers and civil society organization; and research.
