Inclusive Growth through Decent Work in the Great Rift Valley

This project promotes decent jobs through formal skills development and business development and community engagement.

Development Partners: Akiira Geothermal Ltd, Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Forum Syd, County Governments of Narok and Nakuru, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Federation of Kenya Employers, Central Organisation of Trade Unions, Micro and Small Enterprise Authority, National Industrial Training Authority.

Brief overview:

Public Private Development Partnerships (PPDP) is a modality for concrete cooperation between Sida and private sector actors. PPDPs encourage the private sector to proactively create business ventures that also improve conditions for people in poverty. The overarching objective of the PPDP is to increase economic opportunities for people living in poverty.

Project goal:

The project seeks to alleviate the living condition deficiencies by acting as a catalyst to address issues related to decent job creation through formal skills development, business development and community engagement.

Objective (s):                                 

1.      To create decent jobs from better skills by vocational training centers.

2.      To develop new and improve on growing businesses resulting from new relevant skills, business development services and access to finance.

3.      To increase capacity of communities to lobby for increased access to public and social services e.g. water, education, health, sanitation and counties are better able to provide the basic services.

Project activities:

  • Select vocational centers that produce graduates with skills and qualifications demanded by the private sector companies.
  • Selecting private sector companies that provide access to internships and employment opportunities for youth among the target population in Narok and Nakuru Counties.
  • Support Governments of Narok and Nakuru Counties to develop master plan for vocational education and training.
  • Identify sustainable economic opportunities and assess training needs
  • Train women, youth and community members.
  • Provide support on post-training includes wage employment and business development services and access to finance.

 

Project Outcomes/Expectations:

·         Decent jobs from better skills provided by vocational training centers

·         Decent jobs, new and growing businesses resulting from new and relevant informal skills, business development services and access to finance.

·         Communities have the capacity to lobby for increased access to public and social services, e.g. water, education, health, sanitation and county governments have increased capacity to supply these public and social services.

Ultimate beneficiaries:

Youth, women and vulnerable community members in Nakuru and Narok communities.
