Occupational Safety and Health

ACTRAV Symposium on the role of trade unions in the promotion of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the Asia- Pacific region

35 Union leaders from 14 countries in Asia and the Pacific will participate in the Symposium to place greater emphasis on Occupational Safety and Health and promote collective bargaining in the region.

Purpose of the Symposium

To review TU activities in the region in the follow-up to the discussions and in line with the adopted conclusions and action plan at the ACTRAV Symposium on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the mining industry in the Asia -Pacific region that took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 27 August to 29 August 2013;
 
To see what role trade unions can play to place greater emphasis on OSH issues and to encourage them to promote it in their policies and collective bargaining;
 
To familiarize unions with relevant ILO OSH instruments and to encourage them to implement them in order to have more influence on OSH policy making.


Provisional agenda

Day 1:

Current situation of OSH in Asia and the Pacific
  • ILO perspective and Recent developments of national OSH policy-legislative frameworks (laws, national OSH profiles, policy, and programmes) in Asia and the Pacific with special emphasis on tripartite cooperation
     
  • Review TU activities in the region as the follow-up to ACTRAV Symposium on OSH in the mining industry (selected country reviews and general discussion)
     
  • Country perspectives, finding common points (guided presentations by the participants on situation in their countries by sectors (e.g. garment) and OSH issues (e.g. psycho-social)

Day 2:

Current situation & learning
  • Continued - Country perspectives, finding common points (guided presentations by the participants on situation in their countries by sectors (e.g. garment) and OSH issues (e.g. psycho-social)
     
  • Applying and promoting key ILO OSH Conventions (C155, P2002 and C187) – ILO Plan of Action
     
  • OSH improvements under TU initiatives

Day 3:

Planning for the future
  • Roles of TU to provide safe and healthy work environments to all workers in Asia and the Pacific – Action and Strategies
     
  • Roles of trade unions in strengthening OSH regulatory framework for worker protection and applying ILO Conventions and Recommendations in OSH in order to have more influence on OSH policy making
     
  • Concluding discussions and adoption of Jakarta Declaration (OSH promotion by trade unions)
