Looking for answers: Researching hazardous work of children
This summary of a preliminary consultation on the topic of "health impacts of child labour" aims to draw attention to the research gaps and to encourage those with interest and expertise in this area – both agencies and individuals – to join with us in addressing these gaps.
Summary of deliberations of an Expert Group on: a) how to establish global and national estimates of children in hazardous work and who suffer disability as a result; b) how to assess risks in the workplace and how to identify whether risk reduction measures could be taken to enable children above minimum age to work; c) how to use information on hazardous child labour to design policy and laws, notably the “hazardous child labour list” required of States that have ratified ILO Conventions Nos. 138 and 182; d) how to assess work-related psychological risk and damage among working children. e) the causal and contextual factors maintaining high levels of hazardous child labour, with special reference to mining, services, agriculture and manufacturing.
