The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Right to Strike

About the event

Jeff Vogt is the Rule of Law Director of the Solidarity Center, the largest U.S.-based international worker rights organization, and co-founder of the International Lawyers Assisting Workers (ILAW) Network, which brings together workers’ rights lawyers from around the globe.

Jeff will discuss the consequence of a conflict that erupted in 2012 at the International Labor Conference when the Employers’ Group denied the existence of an international right to strike protected by the ILO Constitution and Conventions. The position was contrary to the observations of the ILO supervisory system and the broad tripartite consensus on the principle on the right to strike. In response, the Workers’ Group attempted to refer the matter to the International Court of Justice for binding resolution. While the claim was never referred due to the Employers’ Group’s opposition, the preparatory work undertaken by the Workers’ Group left no doubt that the right to strike is in fact protected under international law.
