  3. Progressing new labour laws in the Pacific Region

    For the last two and a half years the ILO Office of Pacific Island Countries has been working closely with Governments and representative organisations of employers and workers in developing new labour legislation to progressively improve compliance with international labour standards.

  4. Prioritising strategies to tackle discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace

    26 August 2013

    Discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace has been identified as a critical barrier to decent work for women in the Pacific. This is one of key outcomes of an ILO Technical Expert Meeting on Gender and Decent Work held in Suva in July.

  5. Pacific Growth and Employment Project update

    The next phase of the Project commences the in-county activities. Meetings with Stakeholders and prospective participants in the Taskforce are being scheduled for Vanuatu from 15 – 19 September 2013 and PNG from 24 – 28 September 2013.

  6. Pacific Island Countries benefit from ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC,2006)

    A new “bill of rights” – the ILO’s Maritime Labour Convention – comes into force, ensuring protection for the world’s 1.5 million seafarers and fair competition for shipowners.

  7. Tripartite Workshop on Wage Policies for the Pacific Island Countries

    The workshop expects to achieve a clearer understanding of how key principles of collective bargaining and minimum wage setting can be combined into effective wage policies in the context of the Pacific, and initiate a discussion within the tripartite delegations on how this can be implemented at the country-level through the DWCPs that are currently being renewed.

  8. Tonga Update

    In early September, a mission to Tonga will take place to provide technical assistance relating to the development of Tonga’s draft Employment Relations Bill. Tonga has expressed a commitment to joining the ILO as part of programme of work to improve compliance with international labour standards.

  9. Strengthening Tripartite Labour Advisory bodies in the Pacific

    With assistance from the ILO’s Training Centre in Turin, a new training package for tripartite labour advisory bodies is being developed and will be piloted in Vanuatu at a workshop from 19 – 21 November 2013.

  10. Addressing youth employment through promoting entrepreneurship education

    The ILO in collaboration with the Faculty of Business & Economics (FBE) of the University of the South Pacific (USP), Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO) and the Pacific Youth Council (PYC), organised a panel public lecture and panel discussion on 12 August 2013 to mark International Youth Day 2013.
