From 2015 until now, the ILO has supported post-disaster action in three Pacific island countries through conducting Post-Disaster Needs Assessments (PDNAs) of the Employment and Livelihoods Sector, implementing employment-rich recovery projects and through helping micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to establish disaster-resilient business practices. The demand for preparedness and recovery tools for the MSME’s is high, considering the effect of the disaster to income and employment.

  1. Improving labour market outcomes in the Pacific: Policy Challenges and Priorities

Labour markets in the Pacific Island countries are characterized by underemployment, high levels of informality, gender disparities in employment outcomes, and a large and growing share of young people not in education, employment or training. Size and remoteness have hindered economic growth and limited positive labour market outcomes. This Report provides policy guidelines for improving labour market outcomes, focusing on five key areas: first, investing in underserved areas and tackling informality; second, strengthening labour market institutions to make growth more inclusive; third, adopting migration policy that works for all; fourth, addressing inequities between men and women while tackling youth unemployment; and lastly, better preparing for the future of work in the Pacific that is likely to be shaped by the need to tackle climate change.

  1. Outcome Statement - Pacific Summit and Policy Dialogue on Youth Entrepreneurship

Unemployment is the most critical challenge that young people globally confront today. The challenge is particularly acute in the pacific region where jobs in the organised sector are few and far between, while those in the informal sector are often unstable, unsafe and poorly paid. Youth unemployment in the pacific stands at an alarming 23% (SPC, 2011) with young people 4.5-6 times (ILO, 2015) less likely to secure decent jobs relative to older people.

  2. Strengthening Youth Entrepreneurship in the Pacific

The International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with ILO Pacific Community (SPC), Pacific Youth Council (PYC) and the Pacific Leadership Programme (PLP) are convening a 3 day regional summit on young entrepreneurship.
