Draft employment relations bill debated in Tonga

Tonga’s Ministry of Commerce, Tourism and Labour is consulting widely on a draft Employment Relations Bill to progressively implement the International Labour Organisation’s eight fundamental Conventions.

Earlier this month the Ministry convened a workshop bringing together a range of stakeholders from unions, businesses, churches and other agencies to discuss the draft Bill. The consultation workshop was opened by the Hon. Dr. Viliami Latu, Minister for Commerce, Tourism and Labour who expressed the concern about a prolonged absence of labour legislation. In addition to this work, the Government is also actively considering joining the ILO.
