For several months in 2011, Strategies for Decent Work Specialist for the ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries Ms Laila Harre has been in communication with management staff from Vital Voices Global Partnership.
This has resulted in the profile of ILO’s work on promoting gender equality in the workplace being raised significantly, and to the ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries being invited to make a presentation at a Emerging Pacific Women’s Leadership Program workshop hosted by Vital Voices Global Partnership and held in Le Lagon Hotel, Port Vila, Vanuatu from 7th – 9th December 2011.
The mission of Vital Voices Global Partnership is to ‘identify, invest in and bring visibility to extraordinary women around the world by unleashing their leadership potential to transform lives and accelerate peace and prosperity in their communities’
In collaboration with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, AusAID and the Asian Development Bank, Vital Voices is conducting a 19-month program entitled ‘Emerging Pacific Women’s Leadership Program.” This program aims to empower delegations from 11 Pacific Island countries - Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Tonga, Vanuatu, Nauru, the Solomon Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Samoa, the Cook Islands and Niue - to implement a specific project in one of the following issue areas:
o Influencing legislative and policy change to improve women’s labor force participation
o Working to remove legal barriers to women’s entrepreneurship
o Advancing women’s leadership and mentorship in public life
