The ILO, in collaboration with Circle Economy and Solutions for Youth Employment (S4YE) at the World Bank organized an Accelerator Session at this year’s World Circular Economy Forum in Helsinki. The event, titled A circular economy that works for everyone: Ensuring a just and jobs-rich transition to a sustainable future for all, explored how the decent work and circular economy agendas can be combined to deliver an inclusive transition that benefits both people and planet.

Speakers from Sitra – the Finnish Innovation Fund, the African Development Bank, the Confederation of Finnish Industries, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly engaged in a lively discussion on how we can ensure a just transition to a circular economy. The speakers examined the challenges we face across a range of areas including skills, finance and informality. Throughout the event, participants highlighted the need for more and better data to ensure that we can create new circular jobs with fair working conditions. A more detailed summary of the event can be found here.

This is the second event organised as part of the ‘Jobs in the Circular Economy’ initiative from the ILO, S4YE and Circle Economy. This initiative aims to measure, model and monitor jobs in the circular economy with the goal of understanding the associated decent work opportunities and challenges. Members of the initiative recently published a detailed overview  of existing literature relating to decent work in the circular economy. The next phase of the initiative will see the publishing of a comprehensive review of current definitions of circular jobs and analysis of the methods and indicators used to evaluate jobs in the circular economy.
