Contribution of Mutual Health Organisations to Financing, Delivery and Access to Health Care

Synthesis of Research in Nine West and Central African Countries

Firstly, this document presents an estimate of the actual dimension and extent of the phenomenon known as mutual insurance schemes. Then, it examines the effective and potential contributions of these organizations in terms of resource mobilisation, efficiency, equity, improvement of the quality of and access to health-care, sustainability and democratic governance of the health sector. Lastly, it makes a series of recommendations intended for the various agents involved in the functioning and promotion of these types.
