United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2013

Today the UN celebrated South-South cooperation, including an event in New York on implementing sustainable social protection floors.

The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation was marked today by a programme of activities at UN headquarters in New York under the aegis of the UN General Assembly High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation.

The ILO contributed through a presentation on the lessons learned so far from the Social Protection Floor initiative and the relevance of South-South cooperation by Mr Alejandro Bonilla García and Ms Valérie Schmitt of the ILO Social Protection Department. The event, organized jointly by the ILO and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, focused on the theme of "South-South in practice: Implementing sustainable social protection floors.

Social protection is a powerful tool for societies to combat poverty and invest in their own socioeconomic development. Many developing countries have already taken successful measures to build their own nationally defined social protection floors. The results of these efforts show us that the impact of social protection on poverty, vulnerability and inequality can be dramatic. The experience acquired by these countries represents an invaluable resource for others of the global South. As part of the 2013 United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, the event served as a platform for countries to exchange their knowledge, skills and expertise gained from real-world implementations of national social protection floors.

The event included presentations by H.E. Ambassador John W. Ashe, President of the High-level Committee for South-South Cooperation of the General Assembly, Mrs Rebeca Grynspan, United Nations Development Programme Associate Administrator, representing Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Counsellor Sainivalati Navoti, Chair of the Group of 77 and China, Mr Achim Steiner, United Nations Environmental Programme Executive Director, Mr Yiping Zhou, Director, United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, H.E.
