    Brief: The ILO Response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis

    Within the framework of the Regional Refugee Response and Resilience Plan (3RP), the ILO has adopted a development-focused and employment-driven strategy to support host communities and refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. It aims to preserve social and economic stability and enhance resilience at the national level, in line with national plans and chapters of the 3RP. Embedded in the principles of decent work, the ILO strategy builds on its core mandate to promote employment, social dialogue, social protection and international labour standards.

    As part of the wider UN response to the Syrian refugee crisis, the ILO has adopted a development-focused and employment-driven strategy to support host communities and refugees in order to maintain and reinforce the social and economic stability of the affected neighbouring countries. Over recent years, the ILO has used a significant tranche of its RBSA funding to launch activities targeting both Syrian refugees and host communities in Jordan.

    Within the framework of the Regional Refugee Response and Resilience Plan (3RP), the ILO has adopted a development-focused and employment-driven strategy to support host communities and refugees. The ILO strategy builds on its core mandate to promote employment, social dialogue, social protection and rights at work through contributing to building the resilience of host communities and refugees, strengthening institutional capacities and coordination to eliminate child labour, and supporting evidence-based policy development to ensure an employment-rich national response, embedded in the principles of decent work.

    Syrian refugees and Jordanian host communities set to benefit from German-funded ILO jobs and infrastructure project

    The German Government through its Development Bank (KfW) is funding an ILO Employment Intensive Investment Programme aimed at creating short-term jobs for thousands of Syrian refugees and members of their Jordanian host communities, while improving infrastructure in the northern governorates of Irbid and Mafraq.

    Improving working conditions and promoting competitiveness in global supply chains: The ILO/IFC Better Work Programme: Public-Private Partnership

    Better Work is an innovative partnership between the International Labour Organization, the International Finance Corporation, and as at December 2013, 22 buyer partners and 827 factories employing 966,762 women and men. The programme plays a significant role in helping international buyers uphold their commitment to comply with international core labour standards and national labour laws, and to continuously improve their global supply chains.

    The Taqeem Fund: Results-based monitoring and evaluation for youth employment in the MENA region: Public-Private Partnership

    To support youth employment initiatives and improving the effectiveness of their programs, the ILO initiated work on results-based monitoring and evaluation. This new public-private partnership (PPP) supports a select group of small and medium-sized youth employment organizations from the Middle East and North Africa region to develop strategies and provide evidence of their impact, through cost-effective and mass-market technology-based tools. The results are promoted to a broader community of policymakers, practitioners and funders. The Taqeem (wich means “evaluation” in Arabic) Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of fifteen youth employment organizations pioneering new approaches to build capacity in the MENA region to measure and monitor the impact of national programmes.
