    The ILO’s Strategic HIV/AIDS Response in Enterprises (SHARE) taps into the resources of the public and private sectors for the benefit of workers, their families, and enterprises – not to mention national economies. SHARE’s principal objectives are to help overcome HIV employment-related discrimination and to prevent HIV by reducing risky behaviours among workers in selected economic sectors, especially those that might be more vulnerable to HIV due to working and related living conditions.

    In the late 1990s and early 2000s various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaigns emerged to fill the gap created by a weakness in relevant ‘hard laws’ and their implementation. Currently, a marked move towards more ‘traditional’ hard law and industrial relations approaches is leading to profound changes in labour market conditions and governance. These are changes that can bring vertical and horizontal chain reactions throughout the global production chain. A better understanding of these consequences is essential to improve the chain and facilitate equitable growth and development.

    Employment promotion following the earthquake in Mianzhu, Sichuan Province of China: Public-Private Partnership

    In May 2008, an earthquake registering 8.0 on the Richter scale struck the Sichuan province in China. Official statistics state that over 45 million people were affected, including 69,163 deaths. Approximately 6.5 million homes were destroyed and many had to relocate. Around 30 million people lost the majority of their productive assets and almost 2 million people lost their livelihoods. Helping affected persons to develop new livelihoods and seek new sources of income in a new context was the most important need.

    During the past few years, development cooperation between both governments and private industry from the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China, South Africa) and the ILO has been very active. In 2009, Brazil signed an overarching framework agreement on Technical Cooperation with Latin American and African countries for the implementation of the ILO-Brazil Partnership Programme for the Promotion of South-South Cooperation.
