Cooperation initiative between Turkey and Colombia will foster capacities for access to decent work for all during and beyond COVID-19

Decent work is the root of social cohesion and the catalyst for employment opportunities and social protection as well as an essential response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With this in mind, the ILO facilitated two webinars on labour market governance, inclusive employment policies and access to social protection within the framework of the “South-south triangular cooperation (SSTC) initiative between Turkey and Colombia”.

ILO fosters south-south cooperation to promote decent work for Syrian refugees and host communities

Constituents from Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey came together in Jordan to discuss the promotion of decent work for Syrian refugees and host communities in the region, as part of a South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) initiative between the four countries, aimed at exchanging knowledge, skills, resources and technical know-how.

The ILO and Germany’s Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development have signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding which seeks to support job creation in response to the refugee crisis and forced displacement in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.

Brief: The ILO Response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis

Within the framework of the Regional Refugee Response and Resilience Plan (3RP), the ILO has adopted a development-focused and employment-driven strategy to support host communities and refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. It aims to preserve social and economic stability and enhance resilience at the national level, in line with national plans and chapters of the 3RP. Embedded in the principles of decent work, the ILO strategy builds on its core mandate to promote employment, social dialogue, social protection and international labour standards.

Turkey supports the ILO’s mandate both through contributions to the ILO’s core budget and to development cooperation programme. Turkey has become a major refugee-hosting country, with more than 2.8 million Syrian refugees registered. While the address of humanitarian needs has been at the forefront of the response, the focus has been increasingly shifting to livelihoods support.

Within the framework of the Regional Refugee Response and Resilience Plan (3RP), the ILO has adopted a development-focused and employment-driven strategy to support host communities and refugees. The ILO strategy builds on its core mandate to promote employment, social dialogue, social protection and rights at work through contributing to building the resilience of host communities and refugees, strengthening institutional capacities and coordination to eliminate child labour, and supporting evidence-based policy development to ensure an employment-rich national response, embedded in the principles of decent work.
