Improving productivity and competitiveness through labour law compliance in Pakistan's textile sector: Public-Private Partnership

Realising the economic and employment implications of non-compliance for Pakistan, the national Government has developed an International Labour Standard (ILS) Compliance and Reporting Programme to improve workplace practices in the textile industry together with the ILO. The programme will ensure the application of labour laws through the active engagement of the textile industry in order to guarantee the continuity of Pakistan’s exports to the global market.

Stora Enso (SE) is a leading paper, biomaterials, wood products and packaging company with its head offices in Finland and Sweden. Bulleh Shah Packaging (BSP) is its joint venture and agricultural and recycling product supplier. To strengthen its policy and global efforts to promote decent work and eliminate child labour in its value chain in Pakistan, SE has entered into a public-private partnership with the ILO.

ILO and Government of Pakistan sign Letter of Understanding to Support the PPP on Labour Law Compliance in the Textile Sector in Faisalabad

The Government of Pakistan has committed to facilitating an enabling environment for the private sector to comply with international labour standards and labour laws in Pakistan. This was during the signing of the Letter of Understanding to support the Public Private Partnership on Labour Law Compliance in the Textile Sector in Faisalabad targeting 210 industrial units over the next three years.

ILO and the Netherlands sign agreement to strengthen labour inspection systems in Pakistan

The partnership will strengthen institutional mechanisms for effective labour inspection; enhance human resource capacities in the country to enforce the law on labour inspections and partner with the private sector to promote international labour standards and ensure their compliance by enterprises.

Third Buyers Meeting on the Textile Sector in Pakistan

The third Buyers Forum in Pakistan convened with a total of 19 international brand representatives on 23rd June 2015. The Buyers reaffirmed their commitment to better labour and environmental practices in the textile sector. The buyers also agreed to support three key areas i.e. strengthening labour inspection regime, addressing issues of contractual employment and supporting smaller manufacturers to improve international labour standards compliance.

ILO and Pakistan Textile Exporters Association sign a unique Partnership Agreement Promoting Decent Work in Garment and Textile Industry in Faisalabad

The ILO and the Pakistani Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) have forged a Public Private Partnership encompassing a comprehensive framework on improving productivity through training and compliance with International Labour Standards including occupational safety and health, wages, contracts of employment, discrimination and other forms of mal labour practices as well as strengthening employers’ and workers’ bilateral arrangements in textile industry.
