ILO in action
A win-win for young refugees and local farmers

The third of our ILO in Action series of video stories takes us to an ILO refugee project located in Bassikounou, Mauritania. Led by ILO Chief Technical Advisor, Federico Barroeta, the project trains young people in building public infrastructure. In the locality of Lemkhaiss, they are helping to build a dam that will benefit livestock agriculture, the development of seasonal farming and will also reduce risks linked to flooding.

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania, 28 February 2020 – The seventh Council of Ministers of member countries of the G5 Sahel opened Sunday, February 23 in Nouakchott as a prelude of the sixth Summit of Heads of State held on February 25 in the Mauritanian capital.

With a population of over 300 million and a rising trend of urbanization, the Sahel region offers huge opportunities for its populations. At the same time, however, the region is facing an increase in extremism, terrorism and criminality, fueled by endemic poverty, high income inequality, a high rate of youth unemployment and governance deficiencies.

Japan to support youth employment opportunities for refugees and host community in Mauritania

The project aims at promoting economic self-sufficiency of refugees and peaceful coexistence with host communities through the development of employability schemes and decent jobs in infrastructure construction works.

The Taqeem Fund: Results-based monitoring and evaluation for youth employment in the MENA region: Public-Private Partnership

To support youth employment initiatives and improving the effectiveness of their programs, the ILO initiated work on results-based monitoring and evaluation. This new public-private partnership (PPP) supports a select group of small and medium-sized youth employment organizations from the Middle East and North Africa region to develop strategies and provide evidence of their impact, through cost-effective and mass-market technology-based tools. The results are promoted to a broader community of policymakers, practitioners and funders. The Taqeem (wich means “evaluation” in Arabic) Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of fifteen youth employment organizations pioneering new approaches to build capacity in the MENA region to measure and monitor the impact of national programmes.
