Asian inaugural planning meeting of the ILO Global Business and Disability Network

The meeting is the Network’s third inaugural planning meeting, which follows the European and US-based meetings held in Paris and New York in November-December 2010. The Bangalore meeting will be sponsored by Wipro Limited at their corporate office in Doddakannelli, Sarjapur Road, Bangalore.

The ILO Global Business and Disability Network is an initiative of ILO's Bureau for Employers' Activities and Skills & Employability Department. It is within the ILO Public-Private partnership framework. The Network has four goals: knowledge sharing and the identification of good practices among members, development of joint projects and services, strengthening of national employers’ organizations to reach small and medium sized enterprises, and linkage to national ILO projects and activities. Initial Network activities include the publication of Disability in the Workplace: Company Practices - a compilation of 25 company profiles, which describes how companies address hiring and retention, products and services, and CSR from the perspective of disability; creation of a playlist on the ILO-TV of corporate disability and work; and three inaugural planning meetings.

The Bangalore meeting as the two earlier ones will bring together representatives of multinational companies, employer networks and employers’ organizations who are interested in the issue of disability. The agenda includes both knowledge sharing and discussion about the Network’s organizational procedures, possible activities and future steps. Along with the meeting, two optional half-day site visits have been organized before and after the meeting day.

The ILO believes that by participating in such a network and the knowledge sharing activities, companies will benefit from improved productivity, reduced turnover, safer and better workplaces and increased customer and community brand loyalty. Employers’ organizations will increase their capacity to address their member needs related to diversity, corporate social responsibility, legal adherence and human resources.
