Every year, 16 June is observed as Domestic Workers Day. It marks the anniversary of the 2011 passage of the ILO Convention 189 for Decent Work for Domestic Workers, establishing international labour law for domestic workers. Domestic workers highlight the need for getting proper identification, which will enable their work to be viewed with the dignity it deserves.

Domestic workers have been urging for decent work in their workplaces and the ratification of C189 in India.

In 2023, the ILO and the Labour Department of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi organized a workshop to increase the recognition of the importance of care workers in India, including domestic workers.

To ensure their well-being, the Labour Department has initiated consultations on possible legislation covering domestic workers. Nearly 100 participants, including representatives from the Labour Department, trade unions, workers’ organizations, civil society organizations and domestic workers, participated in the workshop.
