ILO presents proven strategies for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the world of work

New Delhi (ILO News) - International Labour Office (ILO) will host the HIV/AIDS Project Dissemination Workshop from 9-11 September, 2009. The Workshop will be inaugurated. by Hon’ble Minister of Labour & Employment, Mr. M. Mallikarjun Kharge on September 9, 2009 at 17.00 at Hotel Le Meridien, Souverign, Windsor Place, Janpath, New Delhi.

Supported by U.S. Department of Labor, ILO’s project “Prevention of HIV/AIDS in the World of Work: A Tripartite Response” has been operational in India since 2001. The ILO has developed a three-phased programme, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MOLE), National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), Employers’ and Workers’ Organizations, UNAIDS, and People Living with HIV (PLHIV). The programme is primarily aimed at putting in place a sustainable national programme on HIV/AIDS in the world of work in India. The project has collaborated with a number of enterprises, both public and private, to help them develop work place policy and programmes aimed at prevention of HIV/AIDS and related issues.

A Dissemination Workshop is being organized to share the models and lessons learnt in implementation of the programme. “Enterprise Training Manual”, “Documentation of Good Practices”, and a handbook, along with an advocacy and training video for people living with HIV on workplace advocacy developed by the project, will be launched on the occasion. The event will bring together participants from National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), people living with HIV (PLHIV), public and private sector enterprises, workers and employers organizations, UN and donor agencies, civil society organizations and Dr Sophia Kisting, Director, ILO/AIDS, Geneva

A series of technical sessions and panel discussions will be held on 10 September and 11 September 2009. Please feel free to attend any session/s of your choice

The ILO programme has resulted in strengthening not only the national policy framework for HIV/AIDS in the world of work but also building the capacity of Ministry of Labour and Employment; Employers’ and Workers’ organizations, public and private sector companies. The programme also developed advocacy, communication and training materials, collaborated with people living with HIV, NACO and State AIDS Control Societies.)
