Schoolchildren Discuss Future of Work: An Essay Contest in Baku

On 14 June 2019, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Azerbaijan held in its premises an awarding ceremony of the essay contest on the topics of the ILO Centenary and the Future of Work. Schoolchildren from Baku took part in the contest.

The awarding ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection Matin Karimli, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isaczai , ILO National Coordinator Yashar Hamzayev and social partners - Javanchir Alkhasov, Deputy Chairman of the Trade Unions' Confederation, Jala Hajiyeva , Vice-President of the Employers (Entrepreneurs) Confederation as well as Gulara Khudiyeva, Ministry of Education.

Matin Karimli spoke highly about the Ministry’s cooperation with the ILO. He referred to the Action Plan developed by the Ministry to mark the ILO Centenary,  one of the events being this contest among 70 schoolchildren from  Baku Binagadi district lyceum- school No. 83 and Baku Sabayil district secondary school No. 239.

According to the Deputy Minister, one of  the objectives of the contest was to draw attention of the schoolchildren who will soon enter the labour market, to their future career, new occupations and professions. He then described labour market trends, innovative economic approaches, new technologies, non-oil sector development, and professions that are now in demand.

Ghulam Isaczai highlighted the role of the ILO in promoting fundamental human and labour rights and social justice.

Yashar Hamzayev focused his presentation on the ILO’s Future of Work Initiative and the Report of the Global Commission on the Future of Work.

By the results of the contest, six winners were awarded diplomas and presents: 1 for the first place; 2 schoolchildren for the second place; 3 children for the third place. Five more children received special prizes.
