Asian crisis on Filipino employment prospects abroad

The impact of the Asian crisis on Filipino employment prospects abroad

The purpose of the paper is to get grips conceptually and empirically with the question of whether Filipinos will lose employment opportunities in Asian destinations, and whether this will involve a sizeable reduction in remittances.

The paper will first set the scene by recalling how many land-based Filipinos are abroad and how much they remit from there. It will then sift through the factors determining the future presence of Filipinos in each of the key countries or territories concerned by the crisis, and will seek to identify whether the sectors or occupations they work in - or for that matter their gender - render them especially vulnerable to economically induced or administratively enforced return migration.
