Operation and maintenance of a water system workshop

Partners from South Upi, Maguindanao conducted a virtual workshop on operation and maintenance of the water system built under the ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project.

The ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project conducted a workshop with partners from South Upi, Maguindanao. The workshop aimed at building their capacity in the aspect of operation and maintenance of the water system to ensure the sustainability of the project.

Topics included the importance of operation management, drafting an operation management plan, operation management structure, calculating the tariff or the monthly dues of workers and the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders.

It was agreed that the local government at the municipal and barangay level, the Parent-Teacher Association of the Timanan Central Elementary School (TCES) have an equally important responsibilities in the operation and maintenance of the water project.

Series of workshops were accomplished as assignments due to challenges in virtual training. Participants held separate meetings and discussions after gathering inputs.

It was agreed that a Sangguniang Barangay Ordinance will be passed to fully support the initiatives of the stakeholders and strengthen the Operations Manual. The municipal local government unit will also be responsible in the over-all project maintenance because they have appropriate funds and technical capacity in major parts of the water system. However, the TCES and barangay local government unit will be assigned on the maintenance within the school premises and minor repairs.
