Workers start to rehabilitate, install and construct a water system in Wao, Lanao del Sur
The ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project in Wao, Lanao del Sur started its rehabilitation and installation of supply pipelines, improvement of mainline pipelines and construction of at least 60 tap stands. This will soon provide safe and clean water to an estimated 2,950 households and 2,320 schoolchildren in six villages (barangays).

To date, a three-kilometre excavation works and pipe laying have been initiated in the first four of the six target barangays. As a counterpart showing their ownership of the project, the Municipality of Wao is currently completing the construction of the mother tank worth Php 4 million. The tank is 95 per cent complete and will be connected to the six barangay-beneficiaries.

Through community-contracting and labour-based approaches, a partner community-based organization, Katutungan Irrigators Association (KIA), was capacitated to implement and monitor the project safely and efficiently. With support from ILO’s implementing partner, A Single Drop for Safe Water, the KIA underwent risk assessment exercises and implements COVID-19 safety protocols in construction sites.
