Social protection orientation in Lanao del Sur

The ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project conducted a series of orientation on social protection in Lanao del Sur. A Single Drop for Safe Water (ASDSW) and the Katutungan Irrigators Association (KIA) as project partners organized the orientation with workers to be hired for the water system construction.

A Single Drop for Safe Water (ASDSW) and Katutungan Irrigators Association (KIA) conducted an orientation meeting on social protection for the initial 104 potential workers who will be engaged in the ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project in Wao, Lanao del Sur.

In Barangay Cebuano, 21 workers were hired. Some asked about sanctions if unable to continue contributions after the project
The meeting was held in Barangay Buot, Cebuano , Kabatangan and Amoyong from 15 to 17 October 2020. The participants were provided with information on the importance social protection including benefits, requirements, services and the obligations once enrolled in the Social Security System (SSS) and the Philippine Health Insurance (PhilHealth).
In Barangay Amoyong, 21 workers attended the orientation with four women who will be hired for construction.

In Barangay Kabatangan, 22 workers with seven women attended the orientation on social protection held in the village hall.
Each worker will be entitled to social protection benefits when hired for the installation and rehabilitation of main pipelines and other construction works identified for the water project in six barangays. Apart from SSS and Philhealth, an accident insurance including third-party liability will also be provided to all the workers.

A total of 281 workers are expected to be hired by KIA, the identified community-contractor which will directly manage and implement the physical works on the ground. Through ASDSW, they were capacitated to perform various tasks for the project including Occupational safety and Health, Basic Life Support and First Aid, Environmental and Social Safeguards, Procurement, among others.

Actual physical works will start by the end of October 2020 and will finish by January 2021. The project aims to provide safe water to at least 3,000 households and 2,000 schoolchildren in the said municipality.
