Safety and health in construction

Occupational safety and health training on water system construction

The ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project provided a training on Occupational Safety and Health in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Employment and the local government of South Upi.

Occupational safety and health (OSH) is vital in the construction of a water system under the ILO-Japan Water and Sanitation Project. Construction is one of the dangerous sectors. To prevent work-related accidents and diseases, the project partnered with the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MOLE) and the local government of South Upi, Maguindao for an OSH training. The initial 21 workers hired to construct the water system at the Timanan Central Elementary School (TCES) joined the training.

Engineer Renato Sarikit provided a briefing and introduced the training. Mr Abdulrakman Nor in his session emphasized the steps and rules to a safer working environment, and the importance of a buddy system during the construction period. He also discussed posting of signage, conducting regular inspection and maintenance of equipment, maintaining a smoke-free workplace and adhering to OSH standards. Workers also had a better understanding of OSH facilities and factors contributing to unsafe acts. Mr Nor further highlighted the use of common sense for their own safety.
