A Roundtable Discussion on the Gap Between Age of Compulsory Schooling and Minimum Age for Work was conducted in the ILO Auditorium on 21 January 2015. With minimum age for work in the Philippines at 15 years old as provided for by different laws, especially Republic Act 9231, and the age of completion of education pushed to 18 years old with the passing of the Enhanced Basic Education Act or or Republic Act 10366 there is now a gap of five years which puts into question the permissibility of work for children from 15 to 17 years old. The forum was attended by workers' groups, the Employers' Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) and key government agencies. The group agreed to further explore the scenario of allowing children from 15-17 years old to work and study at the same time. Moving forward, the following actions towards seeking ways to resolve the issue were identified: 1) to do a research determining the status in neighboring countries on the same issue; 2) to get a legal opinion from the Department of Justice; and 3) conduct another discussion involving more participants once 1) and 2) have been acquired.
